What’s Your Waiting Story?

All of us wait for something or for someone! There are rare moments we succeed and there are many times we fail to grow while waiting. But we don’t lose hope because every day is a chance to wait with a purpose. Do you have one in particular you’d like to share?

God’s answer to your specific prayer might be God’s ultimate test.

The List  was the very  thing I thought I needed in having a special someone. I was confident presenting my specific requests to God. Confidence is good. Specific request is good. But The List taught me a lot more.

Before and after meeting Alaine (the embodiment of The List) , I was a very active leader, passionate in leading the youth, having cell groups, organizing camps and events. My mission was clear.

The Leader Story

I was just on fire. My friends and classmates in high school and college know me as someone always inviting them to church for Bible study or youth fellowship. Yeah, that was me, regarded as the “church girl”. I realized somehow down the road, I lost that fire.

I might have lost it, but my faith has remained. My faith story is not 100% smooth, from being part of a church to being churchless when I was abroad, then going back home with “not what it used to be”, tried church hopping … it’s a long story.

When Alaine came to my life, I prayed more about it before saying yes to him. And what God had impressed in my heart was not what I wanted to hear. I wrote it in my journal. It’s one-page back to back, not just about my heart, but my other desires in life, my leadership, my career, etc. Since this was also the time I was preparing for medical school, with broken promises, unsure of finances, failed the entrance examination and should take it again, things were stressful. Here’s an excerpt from my journal June 15, 2004, entry…

I have a great plan for you, one is to see you lead more youth to my kingdom, to see you shine as bright as a star, not for yourself, but for me…

Hold on, keep seeking me, then and only then you will see why things are happening the way you don’t want it to be…

I’m aware of your hopes, dreams, longings, but my child, it’s not to be that way…

I’m sorry to tell you this, NOT NOW! Keep waiting for your prince, I’ll give him to you at the most unexpected moment of your life, wherein most of your focus is on me…I’ll just surprise you…

Trust me…

I disregarded the importance of obedience when God clearly impressed in my heart to ‘wait’ and to focus more on leadership.

Even when God assured me of His promises about my heart, I chose not to listen, my wisdom prevailed and I even negotiated,

Father, what about The List You’ve answered, with all those check marks, it’s surely Your will!

I should have trusted God more than The List. I should have protected more The Leader in me.

The consequence of my sacrifice? I lost my focus. It was not easy. I was both dealing with leadership and relationship. Things could have been different. I missed the surprise?!

I think the very thing that God wanted to safeguard was the leadership, the influence I had. The blessing of obedience would fulfill my purpose “at the height of my being a youth leader”. It’s the perfect time to focus on my leadership before transitioning to the workforce or before even having a boyfriend. There’s a time for everything.

God might have answered The List prayer to see if I choose Him more than the desires of my heart. And, God might have impressed His promises and assurances to see if I trust Him more than the relationship with Alaine.

They’re tests, and I failed fearing that if not now, when? If not now, I might lose it…

Be careful what you pray for and be ready when God answers it with ‘yes’. Sometimes we are in a better position when God answers us with ‘no’ or ‘wait’.

If it’s ‘no’, most of the time it’s for our protection, for our own good.

If it’s ‘wait’, it’s for our faith to grow. Or, that could be any reasons that only God knows.

If ‘yes’, it’s a gift, it’s a blessing, or it could be a test.

Sometimes, when we’re waiting on God to answer our prayers, and when we see the answer we want – we stop, try to “seal the deal” as fast as we can before “God changes His mind”. We blur anything that may hint a different answer or direction. No other confirmations needed. This is it, God! Period!  So, what can we do about it?

2 Practical Ways To Evaluate God’s YES

Practical Way #1

When God answers us with ‘yes’, don’t just stop there, PRAY MORE, discern more and don’t be anxious about it. Claim God’s promise in Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

When I first read this verse, I was just focused on ‘in everything, by prayer and petition…present your requests to God…’ like putting everything in my journal, having my list with a box to tick when prayers are answered, a proof of presenting everything to God.

But when I was memorizing it, and saying the words repeatedly, the promise became clear and made a lot of sense.

‘…And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.’

So the reason God wants us to entrust everything to Him by prayer and petition, is for Him to give us peace and to work in our midst by guarding our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Relating to Our Daily Prayer and Daily Walk

We might think that by repeating our prayers, the chances of getting answers are higher. But what’s actually happening ~ God is changing our hearts

The more we pray about something, the more God is changing how we see it, and how we deal with it thus guarding our hearts and minds.

Since our hearts and minds are guarded, we’ll not just lose our temper, or say hurtful words to others, for example. Also, when others do unpleasant things to us, we’ll not just retaliate, or do things we’ll regret. Because the more we pray, and the more we present everything to God, the more He changes us

Relating to Our Love Life

About our hearts, as we pray for our special someone, it’s our way of surrendering to God our singleness or our marriage, and His peace will help us focus.

For the singles, when time comes you start to have self-pity, become bitter, ask God questions about the long wait, tempted to have your own way – God will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus … because you’ve been praying for it.

For the married, when time comes that your husband or marriage becomes overwhelming, and you start to wish you’re single, or Proverbs 31The Wife of Noble Character seems hard to achieve – God will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus … because you’ve been praying for it.

So the prerequisite is to PRAY FIRST, PRAY MORE, …in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God…

And the amazing promise of God follows,

‘…And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.’

Practical Way #2

Always distinguish our own desires from God’s desires, and be strong to follow His desires, especially when He gives more options.

When God gives us two or more seemingly right options, it will test our priorities and desires. We need to be more prayerful to discern in choosing the best option that brings more glory to God. We’re not robots, God always gives us the gift of choices. It’s our part to pray for wisdom, to seek His Words, to have Godly counsel.

James 1:5 says,

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it be given to you.

When God specifically answered The List prayer, I was undoubtedly happy. But with God’s other answer to The Leader prayer, my desire prevailed over His. I failed but God remained faithful.

Romans 8:28 says,

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

So despite the roller coaster ride – learning things the hard way, my relationship with Alaine was still beautiful and promising before things got shaky on our fifth year #TheRelationship.

the leader - faith in action

Our willingness to obey reflects how big our faith is. Our willingness to sacrifice shows how we want to do it our way. To obey or to sacrifice?!

We obey because we have faith in God. We have faith so we obeySometimes the fruit/effect of our obedience is not immediate, but continue to trust God. His ways and thoughts are always higher, ALWAYS!

Isaiah 55: 8-9 says,

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,”
declares the Lord.
“As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.

The Hall of Faith in Hebrews 11 shows the magnificent people in the Bible who obeyed God all the way until they’re called home. They had amazing obedience stories. For some, they also had their fair share of mistakes, failures, disobedience… but God redeemed them.

So the choice is ours, it’s either we have our redemption story or obedience story. Maybe both.
